The Chorotegas come from Mesoamerica. They are considered the southernmost ethnic group of Mesoamerican culture and established on the Pacific Coast of Honduras, Nicaragua and Nicoya (Costa Rica) between the 6th and 7th centuries.

In Costa Rica, the Chorotegas (Nicoyas, Chomis, Orotinas Zapandies and Churutegas) occupied all the Nicoya Peninsula, the Chomes region and the eastern side of the Nicoya Gulf.

Chorotega language, almost extinct, is an etymology based on the classical Nahua Language. During the years it has become part of the Costa Rican idiosyncrasy.
