Cool Caribbean Vibe

Puerto Viejo, a world apart

San José, Sarapiquí & Puerto Viejo

There is something that lies just under the surface of our country, which fills us with pride: our diversity and multi-ethnic heritage. About 8% of the population of Costa Rica is Black African descent or Mulatto (mix of European and black) who are called Afro-Costa Ricans. Most of them are English-speaking descendants of 19th-Century black Jamaican immigrant workers.

Day 5:

Puerto Viejo isn’t for everyone. If you are looking for luxury resorts with poolside drinks you will find that it is not the vibe here. Instead, think of a fresh coconut on the beach under an almendro tree while reggae plays at a neighboring bar or rent a bike and explore the quaint town while admiring the exotic ambience full of local boutiques and art shops.

The “Lapas” tour takes you to our lookout point with spectacular views of the forest and the sea. At the lookout observe the stunning Great Green Macaws, once again flying free in their natural habitat, looking for the feeders on top of the trees. They feed then with beach and mountain almonds.

Indulge in the earthly pleasures of this magnificent region, rich in exuberant nature, rustic experiences and typical cuisine.

Puerto Viejo is home of beautiful beaches as Cahuita, Manzanillo, Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra and Punta Uva.

Interesting cuisine using local, fresh ingredients has been an important Afro-Caribbean contribution. Spicy jerk chicken, lobster and fish are favorites along with patacones (deep fried green plantains), added to the rice and beans with coconut milk… always with a very cold beer.
