Río Celeste

The Tenorio Volcano National Park is known by its diversity of wildlife and marvelous sights.

The hike through the rainforest is challenging, steep steps and mud are common, but totally worth it once we arrive to our first stop, the 30-meter waterfall that ends in a lagoon with an amazing sky blue color.

The next stop is a small lagoon which color is an optical illusion, produced by the volcanic minerals in the water that reflects only blue light. We proceed to Hervideros, a natural spring of boiling water, which will welcome you with a strong smell of sulfur coming from the Tenorio Volcano.

We then continue towards Teñideros, where the color phenomenon starts, and the contrast with non-colored water is noticeable.  On the hike back, keep your eyes open, remember you are amongst hundreds of species and with a little luck, you will spot some more nature wonders.

To regain energy, we will enjoy a tasty typical “casado” for lunch at Finca Verde; formerly an agricultural land that the owners dedicated to protect wildlife, some of which you may find during a guided walk that includes: birds, bats, monkeys, sloths, and several types of frogs.  There is also a butterfly farm full of blue morphos, one of the most impressive species in Costa Rica.
